This is a recipe that you can customise any way you want in how it looks as the toppings and decorations can be changed to your preference if you want. You can use almost any decorations from sprinkles to icing and of course, you can make it any shape you want as it is dough before it goes in the oven. You can create whatever you like with the decorations from smiley faces to more complex baking with gingerbread houses, however this recipe is not suitable for making gingerbread houses. I made mine Christmas trees, as they were a Christmas present for my grandparents and as I could not send them in the post, they would be an early present because they were coming down to visit us anyway therefore, it would be a good time to give it to them.
300g self-raising flour
Handful icing sugar (for dusting)
4 teaspoons ground ginger
100g caster sugar
50g margarine
3 tablespoons golden syrup
4 tablespoons milk
Whatever decorations you would like
First, heat up the oven to 160° C or 155° C for fan assisted ovens, you will need it to be hot, ready for when the gingerbread goes in. First, put the margarine, sugar, and syrup in a pan on a medium heat.
Now whilst, the pan is heating up you can get the dry ingredients ready: for this you will need to get the flour and ginger in a separate bowl and there you are. If you like, for something to do, you can mix them together. Once the sugar has dissolved, and the contents of the pan are a smooth liquid,
you can pour them into the dry ingredients and mix them well. To finish the dough, add the milk and place on an icing sugared work top – the reason for icing sugar, is that it will give it a nicer taste than flour and won't dry the gingerbread out – now knead.
Roll the dough out about 1.5 cm thick and cut into your desired shape and place on a greaseproof paper lined baking tray. They only need 10-15 mins in the oven before you can tuck in and enjoy. Or if you are decorating them, they you will need to wait until they are cool until you can decorate with icing because if you don’t, then the icing will just run off, but if you are using glitter or something not a liquid, then go straight for it!
